"Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become your actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny."

Progression in Knowledge and Skills for Personal Development at Floreat Montague Park

In Early Years, the bespoke Personal Development curriculum is taught from Reception upwards. However, due the holistic nature of the EYFS curriculum Personal Development is a fundamental element throughout our daily teaching and practice. Through the bespoke curriculum, Reception children discuss who is in their family, how to build positive relationships and begin to recognise their own feelings. The children also learn how to talk about themselves in a positive way and are supported to reflect upon their own qualities. Towards the end of the children’s Early Years journey, they learn that all children have rights and these are inherent.

In Key Stage One, the children expand upon their prior knowledge learnt in Early Years. As the children continue to develop their own personality and friendships, the Personal Development Curriculum adapts to this and provides them with the opportunity to explore positive relationships in a variety of ways, in particular how to interact safely online. The children also continue to develop  their confidence to talk about their own talents and interests. Within this work, the children also explore how we are all different and are introduced to the concept of being proud of themselves. During the summer term, the children broaden their understanding of children’s rights and learn key terms like unconditional, universal.

In Lower Key Stage Two, the children widen their knowledge of relationships by exploring key terms like peer pressure which strengthens their understanding that some relationships can be negative. Throughout the year, our Personal Development curriculum promotes the importance to respect others and that our individuality is what makes us special. The children learn to talk about their own heritage and understand that everyone has the right to celebrate their own culture. Relating to their rights, the children  explore the key terms inalienable and indivisible and recognise how they link to their mental wellbeing.

In Upper Key Stage Two, Personal Development focuses on embedding the children's learning so far but also supports preparing the children for their transition to secondary school and a different environment. Across the two school years, the children will be introduced to and explore words such as discrimination, prejudice and sterotyping. The sessions will also cover physical contact and what is appropriate and inappropriate contact. In line with the statutory guidance, the children will also be taught about puberty, hormonal changes, drugs and internet safety. The children will recap all of the key terms of their rights and look at the ABCDE of rights.

As Floreat Montague Park is an awarded Silver Rights Aware school Silver logoby UNICEF, teaching children about their rights will underpin and form some of the ethos of our school. Therefore, your child may tell you about the rights they are learning throughout the year, as we teach them through our daily school routine, fundraising days, classroom life and daily assemblies. At Floreat Montague Park we believe that we should teach for the rights, about the rights and through the rights of a child.
