GLF Schools

GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Sam Alami
Phonics Subject Leader

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read and write by helping them understand how sounds in spoken language correspond to the letters on a page. The study of phonics is closely linked to speaking, listening, spelling, and grammar, and it ensures that all children become confident and fluent readers and writers.

At Floreat Montague Park, we follow The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised curriculum. We use a systematic approach, meaning that children frequently revisit sounds and build on their existing knowledge in a logical, step-by-step way. This helps all learners feel engaged and develop a love of reading through the comprehensive curriculum.

The Little Wandle program follows these core principles:

  • Maintain the pace: The daily pace of the curriculum is designed to help all children keep up.

  • Keep it simple: The teaching process is clear and easy for children to follow.

  • Apply the learning: Children are encouraged to apply what they learn in phonics to their daily reading and writing.

  • Be consistent: Using the same routines and practices helps children feel secure and confident.

  • Expect success: The program is built on the belief that every child can succeed at reading and writing.

  • Speak clearly: The ability to speak clearly and articulate sounds is crucial for teaching and learning phonics.

  • Use decodable books: Children read books that only contain sounds they have already been taught.

The Little Wandle website has a dedicated 'For Parents' section with valuable resources to help you support your child's reading at home. Here you can find videos demonstrating how to pronounce the sounds taught at each stage, as well as guidance on how the program works and how to support reading practice and share books at home.
